Brick Paver Sealing in Fort Myers: How to Choose the Right Sealer and Company

Brick Paver Sealing in Fort Myers: How to Choose the Right Sealer and Company

Brick paver driveways, walkways, and pool decks are everywhere in Fort Myers, and sooner or later every one of them needs sealing. The difficult part is not deciding to seal — it is choosing the right sealer and the right company, because the market is full of quotes that look identical on paper and produce very different driveways two summers later. This guide explains the choices in plain terms and gives you the questions that separate a careful job from a fast one.

First, what sealing actually does for brick pavers

Sealing does three jobs at once. It slows the UV fading that turns red and charcoal pavers into pale pink and gray. It closes the pores so oil, rust, and organic staining bead up instead of soaking in. And it helps lock the joint sand in place, so summer downpours do not wash it out and let weeds, ants, and shifting pavers follow. In Fort Myers' heat, humidity, and rain, a good seal typically lasts about two to three years before it needs renewing.

What sealing does not do: it does not level sunken pavers, fix a washed-out base, or repair cracked pieces. Those are paver repair jobs, and they come first.

Choice 1: the finish you want

  • Natural (matte). Protects without changing the look. The pavers look clean and new rather than shiny. A good choice for homeowners who like an understated finish and for areas where grip matters.
  • Satin. A light color boost with a soft sheen — the middle ground most Fort Myers driveways end up with.
  • Wet look (gloss). Deepens the color dramatically, the way pavers look right after rain. Striking on driveways and entries. On pool decks it needs an anti-slip additive, or it should be avoided in favor of a lower-sheen finish.

Choice 2: the type of sealer

Penetrating sealers soak into the paver and protect from within, leaving no film on top. They keep the natural texture and grip and rarely haze, but they add little color enhancement.

Film-forming sealers — usually acrylic — leave a protective layer on the surface. That layer is what produces the satin or wet-look finish. They come in two main bases:

  • Solvent-based acrylic gives the deepest color enhancement and strong resistance to oil and UV. It is unforgiving of moisture: applied over pavers that are not fully dry, it traps water and turns cloudy white.
  • Water-based acrylic is lower-odor and more forgiving to apply, with a more subtle color boost.

There is no single "best" sealer for every brick paver in Fort Myers. The right product depends on the paver (clay brick holds its color well and is sealed mostly for stain resistance and joint stability; concrete brick pavers fade faster and benefit more from enhancement), on whether there is an old sealer already on it, and on the look you want. A contractor who recommends the same product for every job without looking at your surface is guessing.

Choice 3: what happens before the sealer goes on

Most sealing failures are preparation failures. A careful job looks like this:

  1. Assessment. Is there an old sealer? Is it intact, worn, or failing in patches? Sealing over a failed sealer is the most common reason a driveway turns cloudy.
  2. Deep cleaning. Algae, oil, rust, tire marks, and efflorescence (the white mineral bloom on newer pavers) are removed. Sealing over contamination locks it in under the finish.
  3. Joint sand. Low or washed-out joints are refilled — polymeric sand where appropriate, which hardens to resist washout, weeds, and ants.
  4. Complete drying. Typically 24 to 48 hours, planned around the forecast. In the summer rain pattern this is the step rushed contractors skip, and it is the step that decides whether the finish stays clear.
  5. Application in the right number of coats, usually one or two depending on product and paver porosity, then a cure time of about 24 to 48 hours for foot traffic and around 72 hours before parking on it.

How to choose a brick paver sealing company in Fort Myers

Ask every company you are considering these questions. The answers will tell you more than the price.

AskA good answer sounds like
What sealer will you use, and why that one for my pavers?A specific product type matched to your pavers, existing sealer, and finish — not "our usual."
How do you clean before sealing?Surface cleaning plus stain and efflorescence treatment, with the method matched to the surface.
Do you re-sand the joints? They check joint depth and refill where needed before sealing.
What if it rains or the pavers are not dry? They reschedule rather than seal damp pavers.
What happens if the finish turns cloudy?A clear explanation of the cause and how they make it right.
Is the quote the final price?A written quote after seeing the surface, with strip jobs or repairs quoted separately.
Can I see recent work and reviews?Photos of local jobs and verifiable reviews.

Red flags

  • A price given over the phone without anyone seeing the pavers.
  • Same-day wash and seal in the middle of summer, with no drying window.
  • No mention of the old sealer, or of joint sand.
  • A high-gloss finish recommended for a pool deck with no word about slip resistance.
  • Big-box store sealer applied with a garden sprayer.

What brick paver sealing costs in Fort Myers

Sealing in Southwest Florida commonly runs about $0.50 to $1.25 per square foot, with most residential driveways and pool decks landing between $300 and $700. Older driveways that need a failed sealer stripped, significant joint sand replacement, or repairs first are quoted after an on-site look — those jobs are larger, and an honest quote says so up front.

Keeping the seal working

  • Do the water test each season: if water beads, the sealer is working; if it soaks in within about 30 seconds, it is time to reseal.
  • Clean oil drips and rust spots early, before they set.
  • Redirect sprinkler heads that spray the driveway — iron in the water is the main source of orange staining.
  • Avoid very high-pressure washing between seals; it strips the finish early.
